Many homeschoolers are Homeschool Convention veterans. And most conventions offer the same things – lots of opportunities to see and purchase curriculum, encouraging workshops, and learning about new approaches to teaching.
Confession: I was homeschooled from JK to Grade 12, and have been homeschooling for the last 5 years, and have NEVER attended a homeschool convention. *Gasp!* Though I have gotten many a debrief from others who have gone, I myself have never walked through the doors of one. Why on earth not?! you may ask.
Because for the most part, I can get my hands on curriculum by borrowing it from other homeschoolers. I can read reviews and ideas online and make my decisions using purchasing discounts, review codes, and by buying second hand. I can attend workshops elsewhere, or pick the brains of the homeschool mom community (including my own mom and mother-in-law!) I am blessed with, both online and in real life.
While homeschool conventions do offer a valuable resource of opportunities and encouragement, it has just never been something I’ve been interested in going to. Until I heard about the Teach Them Diligently Convention.
How is Teach Them Diligently different than your average homeschool convention?
The aim of Teach Them Diligently is completely different than any other homeschool convention. Something I have noticed in the workshops offered at most conventions is they are aimed toward the teaching MOTHER, instead of toward the teaching PARENTS. Yes, most of the homeschoolers out there are being taught by their mothers. But what is being overlooked is the important role of FATHERS in the homeschool.
When you check out their Statement of Faith, you can see how the focus is on the BIBLE as the Word of God and the TRUTH. Too many times we see truth being sacrificed for what’s convenient and easy to teach, or the less in-your-face approach.
Teach Them Diligently seeks to reconcile that, bringing the focus of the HOME back to Deuteronomy 6:4-7, “You shall teach them diligently to your children. And you shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you arise”. They enable and encourage mothers AND fathers to be involved in the planning and teaching of their childrens’ heart, soul and mind. Just how they do that you’ll have to attend to find out!
I encourage you to check out the Teach Them Diligently website where they’ve listed the speakers they have booked so far – and am I ever excited about who is going to be there! Here are just a few:
- Pam Tebow!
- Voddie Baucham
- Davis and Rachael Carman (from Apologia)
- Ken Ham!
- Mark Hamby (from Lamplighter Ministries)
- Crystal Paine (Money Saving Mom)
- Hal and Melanie Young (authors of Raising Real Men)
- Heather Laurie (a fantastic special needs homeschool blogger I am privileged to know online!)
As if that isn’t enough, there are 3 great locations to attend!
