Five Minute Friday – Quiet (or not)

by MomLaur83 on November 9, 2012

I seriously love this Five Minute Friday community! Everyone encouraged in their writing to hold nothing back…I’m not a plan it out and write it out kind of person – I’m more of a fly-by-the-seat-of-my-pants type, and it works for me. But somehow, this five minutes forces me to condense my thoughts, to write more intentionally, to get my point across in a more concise way…and I love it. Join us?

 Five Minute Friday

1. Write for 5 minutes flat – no editing, no over thinking, no backtracking.
2. Link back here and invite others to join in.
3. And then absolutely, no ifs, ands or buts about it, you need to visit the person who linked up before you & encourage them in their comments. Seriously. That is, like, the rule. And the fun. And the heart of this community..

QUIET

They’ve asked me the last couple of nights if I would read them a story. Daddy’s been sick, and this mommy is plum wore out. My answer, short and sweet: “No, not tonight. Mommy needs quiet.”

We have in the middle of a day an instituted hour of quiet time. Mommy needs the break, time to think, maybe nap as baby girl inside has only 4 more weeks until she adds to the chaos of the day to day. Mommy needs quiet.

I’m on the phone – and suddenly the normally somewhat orderly breakfast time turns into absolute chaos. What is that button that kids have when mommies turn the phones on that makes them go all crazy? “PLEASE guys, mommy needs QUIET!”

Someone’s crying. They’re all in bed, yet still not asleep. It’s 9 o’clock, this is ridiculous, I just want to go to bed. I am tempted to stomp down the hall, see who is once again disturbing MY quiet. The littlest girl, she has growing pains. Mommy knows too well what that was like, the pain as a child. Rubbing, massaging the littlest ones legs, comforting her pain. Suddenly, I don’t care anymore about the quiet.

I want my children to learn to be orderly, respectful, honouring others, behaving appropriately at the right time. But I also want them to learn to be children. Time goes by all too quickly – and if quiet means that they’re tucked away somewhere, I’d rather they be near me. I’d rather have the noise of them living, near to me, growing, learning, comforting, teaching, connecting, loving, sharing, than the quiet.

Most of the time :0)

Beautiful post! I needed to read that this morning. I stomp down the hall a lot.. or up the stairs or down the stairs or across the room…I’m trying to do better. When discussing with my mentor a couple of weeks ago she said, “In those moments when you’re too tired to be civil, remember, the days may be long, but the years are short.” With my oldest being 14 and my youngest being 4, I am definitely learning the truth in this statement.

Oh thank you Joy for coming by here! Yes, the years are too short and our words can have such an impact in such a short amount of time!

Beautiful and so true! Always learning to balance Mommy’s need for quiet with the not-so-quiet but oh-so-precious years of childhood!

It goes too, too fast :0(

Oh I love your heart! ;)

“I’d rather have the noise of them living” … I’m taking this with me and am going to remember this. even if I have to write it on the mirror in bright red lipstick :)

    Hugs to you!
