On one of our bookshelves as a child, my mom had the entire collection of adult and children’s encyclopedias. They were jam packed with all kinds of interesting facts, ideas, experiments, research and information. We loved pouring over the books, and would often sit for hours in the middle of a pile, absorbing as much as we could.
Now as a parent in a totally new age , one of everything available through technology, most of this information can be found online in some format, and as it changes so very quickly, it isn’t worth purchasing an encyclopedia set (unless it is a really cool vintage set – the pictures are still amazing, and it could provide good teaching opportunities or spark research to find the current information).
But my kids are still young, so I’d really like for them to have a book they can go to that contains intriguing information about the world we live in. AND gives the truth. Because a lot of the encyclopedias out there are chock full of the worlds’ lies.
Last week we received the Children’s Atlas of God’s World from Master Books. It was a bit of a surprise, I wasn’t expecting it to come, and I nearly jumped through the roof when I opened the package! It’s been on my wish list for our 2013-2014 school year, but I hadn’t worked it in yet. Then it came. The kids were as thrilled as I was and immediately stole it out of my hands.
What can I say, these big books from Master Books are like candy. A special treat to the eyes and food for the mind. It’s full to the brim of each of its 94 pages with facts and background on over 20 countries, 7 continents and the natural world.
I have never really LOVED geography, but I love history and facts and learning about countries, and I can see this is going to be an exciting way for us to learn about countries of the world. I started teaching my kids over the summer a bit about certain world regions, but I there was so much information out there I didn’t know how to supplement without turning it into a whole country study. The Children’s Atlas of God’s World is the PERFECT book. There is just enough information that you’re learning a lot about the countries, without feeling overwhelmed by all of it. Plus it ‘s a great starting point for deeper studies and getting to know what missionaries are facing in some of these countries.
